Sony Xperia XZ Compact G8441 Geekbench scores are strange

It still may or may not make sense, but Sony does seem to have a "Compact" flagship ready to ship soon. Actually, we're not yet sure if it will indeed be called the Xperia XZ Compact, but the Sony G8441, which is its more formal name, has shown up at Geekbench after its appearance in AnTuTu about a year ago. And while there is less information to be gleaned in this new leak, it does support the image of a smartphone with high-end specs but a mid-range screen.

The G8441 that appeared on AnTuTu last July listed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and 4 GB of RAM sitting inside a device with a 720p resolution screen of still unknown size. That rather strange combination is something that's usually seen only in Sony's "mini" flagships.

Some of that has been confirmed by the Geekbench listing. It names the processor of the Sony G8441 as the MSM8995, which is the model number of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. It also puts 4 GB of RAM with it. Pretty much in line with the AnTuTu figures.

That said, the scores that the G8441 "Xperia XZ Compact" show is a bit lower than usual. The Xperia XZ1, also an unreleased model, has nearly the same specs but has higher scores in both single and multi core tests. Given that the G8441 has a lower screen resolution, it should perform better. At least in theory.

Sony supposedly axed its "Standard Premium" line, which included the old Compact models, so the G8441's existence is also a bit of a surprise. Not that many would complain about having a smaller and hopefully more affordable flagship in the market. Considering the Sony G8441 runs Android 8.0, we might not find the answers until the last quarter of the year or in September at the earliest.
