Some users facing bricked Nook Color eReaders after 1.2 update

There were a lot of Nook Color users who were excited this week when the 1.2 update for the eReader firmware was launched. The Nook Color runs Android and the update brought with it new apps, features, and email access. This was the first big step from Barnes & Noble towards making the eReader into a real Android tablet. At the time, we told the owners of the tablet that they could either wait for the update to be applied automatically, or it could be applied manually.

Users who applied the update could get their devices up and running with no issues to start with and then things went bad for some. According to the multiple threads on the Barnes & Noble forums, some are seeing their Nook Color device reset randomly and when the eReader resets the device is unable to connect back to the B&N network. When the tablet can't connect to the network it can't reactivate and is essentially bricked until a fix is made.

The error message that the users are getting can be seen in the image above. It's not clear if the error is limited to those that applied the update manually and then B&N tried again to apply the update automatically or if all users regardless of how the update was applied are getting the error. At this point, it seems to be related to those that manually applied the 1.2 firmware. WiFi issues are also being reported with networks not showing up that are in range making the Color unable to connect to WiFi intermittently.
