Ring Stick Up Cam takes on Nest Cam wire-free

Connected doorbell maker Ring is wading into the security camera space, with Ring Stick Up Cam promising the easiest installation on the block. The new camera, announced at CES 2016 today, is wire-free, courtesy of WiFi for streaming video through your router to your smartphone or tablet, and an internal rechargeable battery for power.

The 5,200 mAh li-ion pack means no power cabling is needed – Ring says it'll last 6-12 months, "depending on usage" – while things on your iOS, Android, or Windows 10 device are kept simple since the Stick Up Cam uses the same app as the Ring doorbell does.

In fact, the company is seeing the two as complementary, even though the doorbell also includes a video camera. Since that's likely to be right by your front door, so Ring's argument goes, Stick Up Cam is a straightforward way to add an eye on your back door or yard.

Two-way audio is supported, and there's motion-triggered recording to the cloud. Night vision is fitted, too, and the camera captures at 720p resolution.

Ring Stick Up Cam is up for preorder now, priced at $199, and is expected to ship in 2-3 weeks time.
