(RED) Apple Grows As New Products And Apple Pay Fund AIDS Research

Apple is marking World AIDS Day with a bevy of new products that also mark its ten year anniversary of partnering with (RED). Four new accessories – including an iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case now available in the appeal's distinctive hue – have been added to the Cupertino company's range ahead of the holidays, while Apple will also donate a portion of Apple Pay transactions to the fund. It's not all digital, mind: Apple Stores across five continents will be running (RED) promotions.

More than 400 retail locations, in fact, will be "turning red" with special (RED)-themed logos or window decals. From December 1 to December 6, any Apple Pay purchase made an an Apple Store, on Apple's online store, or via the company's app will see $1 go to (RED). If you've got a Bank of America card registered, and you use that to pay, the bank itself will make a $1 donation too, up to a total of $1m. A commitment to match that by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will double it to $2m.

There's also a (BANK OF AMERICA)RED pop-up in Bryant Park in New York City. As well as selling gifts there, with proceeds going toward the charity, there'll be a gift wrapping offer for previously purchased items. The bank will donate $5 for each gift wrapped.

A set of (RED) Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones are priced at $299.95, while a (RED) Pill+ Portable Speaker is $229.95.

Exactly what percentage of the sticker price of each product goes to charity has not been disclosed. If you're a fan of The Killers, the band's holiday album "Don't Waste Your Wishes" is an iTunes exclusive. Sales of the download will go to (RED)'s Global Fund.

Meanwhile, a number of "Games for (RED)" have updated in the App Store, with twenty titles offering in-app purchases with proceeds being donated entirely to the (RED) appeal. Exactly what's for sale depends on the game itself: in Angry Birds 2, for instance, there's a special (GEM PILE)RED, while CSR2 has partnered with Bugatti to make the Chiron a (RED) exclusive. Buying it opens up a number of (RED)-only races. The full game of participating titles is as follows:

(RED) says that it has raised more than $365m in the ten years since the charity was founded by U2 frontman Bono, impacting 70 million people across the world. As well as funding the search for a cure for AIDS, (RED) provides antiretroviral medication (ARVs) to pregnant women who have HIV, so as to help avoid passing the virus on to their baby. By following the recommended regimen of medication and best-practice, the risk of transmission of HIV from mother to child is cut to under 5-percent, the charity says.
