PS4 and Xbox One crossplay just got some great news

For quite some time now, there has been a lot of back and forth between Microsoft and Sony, with crossplay at the center of it. Some high-profile developers have brought up the possibility of allowing PS4 and Xbox One owners to play multiplayer games with and against each other. Microsoft is even on board with the plan, but thus far, Sony hasn't been.

When Rocket League developer Psyonix said that it was ready to implement cross-platform play between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Sony put an end to that quickly. Just as well, when Microsoft revealed that Minecraft would soon allow players from all platforms to share worlds together – whether those platforms were Switch, mobile, Windows 10, or Xbox One – Sony and the PlayStation 4 were noticeably absent from the list.

This has been frustrating for players, especially those who have friends playing the same games on a different console. As it turns out, though, Sony's decision about crossplay may not be set in stone. At Gamescom this week, GameReactor spoke to Xbox Head of Marketing Aaron Greenberg, asking him if talks about crossplay were still happening between Microsoft and Sony.

"Absolutely, yeah. We're talking to Sony [about crossplay], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers," Greenberg said. "So we're talking to them and we're hopeful that they'll be supportive of it."

So, it looks like if crossplay is going to happen between PS4 and Xbox One, Minecraft may end up being the catalyst. Of course, Sony may only allow crossplay for Minecraft as a special exception to its rule, but we're guessing that PS4 fans will start demanding crossplay in other games like Rocket League if it goes live in Minecraft. Stay tuned, because it certainly seems like this isn't the end of the crossplay saga.
