Prototype Porsche 911 spied rocking digital instrument cluster

The high-end automotive world is moving to all digital instrument clusters rather than the gauges with physical needles we are used to. Recently a Porsche 911 was spied plying the streets that looked as you expect a 911 to look on the outside, but had something very cool on the inside. Take a gander at what appears to be the future dash for the car.

A look at the rather blurry image above shows a large centrally mounted tachometer with a physical needle and that is it for physical gauges. All the other gauges are digital, even though what appears to be the speedometer to the left of the tach does have a virtual needle. We would assume that those gauges in digital form can be customized to show whatever it is that the driver wants to see.

Porsche is using digital dashes in the Panamera and the Cayenne already, the same coming to the 911 is no surprise. Current 911s still get by with mechanical gauges, the second image below shows what the guage cluster in the current 911 looks like. It's a nice place to work for sure, but being able to configure the gauges to what you want would be welcome.

Digital gauges are becoming the norm with high-end sports and luxury cars. Audi for instance has the Virtual Cockpit tech inside many of its models. Porsche needs to keep up and has been with it non-sports cars. It's no surprise really to see the sporty models moving digital, but at least we get to keep the analog tach and needle so you can see it jump around when in full hoon mode.

The spy photos in the gallery also show what is allegedly the next Porsche 911 exterior. If you expect a big design change between models, you don't know Porsche. The new 911 has the internal code name 992 and looks, as expected, pretty much like the previous 911, which is a good thing.
