ProtonMail's VPN Android app launches with free, unlimited access

Last summer, the team behind the encrypted email service ProtonMail announced its own VPN service, giving the public access to secure browsing. The service came out of beta back in June 2017, though not for every platform. That changed on Monday with the launch of ProtonVPN for Android, bringing secure mobile browsing to smartphones and tablets around the world.

The company calls its ProtonVPN Android launch a new milestone for the service, which offers security-based products for helping private matters stay private. ProtonVPN is presented as a "substantially" different alternative to other free VPN products found for Google's mobile platform, offering users access without restrictions.

ProtonVPN doesn't have data caps, bandwidth limits, or any other restrictions, the team explains, including for the free plan. The service isn't used to gather and sell data on users, nor to install malware on devices, which is an issue with 38-percent of Android VPN apps, according to the company. The goal is for users to trust ProtonVPN with their data.

ProtonVPN's various security features like TOR via VPN and Secure Core are all present in the mobile app, as well as connection profiles so that users can easily connect to their preferred servers. Despite that, the app is designed to be simple to use, including one-tap login and connections. Though free, users also have paid options, such as Basic with access to all countries instead of just three, two devices instead of one, and high speeds instead of low. There's also an $8/month Plus plan and a $24/month Visionary plan.
