Portal movie info may be coming 'soon' says J.J. Abrams

It seems the Portal movie is still happening (albeit slowly), and we may be hearing an announcement about it in the near future, at least according to comments made recently by J.J. Abrams. Both the planned Portal movie and a Half Life movie are "still very much in development," according to Abrams, but we don't have any information about them yet — no word about when they'll finally be hitting theaters or anything else.

Both Portal and Half Life movies were announced back in 2013, and while fans have been eager for them to enter development, there's been basically no updates since them. That's disheartening, and some have speculated that the movie plans had been scrapped. That's not the case, Abrams told IGN in a recent statement. In fact, he said, "We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we're very active, I'm hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon."

Hoping is hardly a concrete statement that we'll definitely be hearing an announcement soon, but it's good news regardless. Abrams went on to say that the group has been engaging in talks with writers, and he suggested those writers are very passionate about the franchise.

"As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal," said Abrams, "what's the movie of this, it's incredible when you talk to someone who just 'gets' it, it's like, oh my god, it's really the seed for this incredible tree you're growing."

In the meantime, there are some other game-based movies in the works, including the Assassin's Creed movie many are looking forward to. Some overseas video game movies are also in the pipeline, including that CGI Resident Evil game coming out of Japan early next year.
