Pokemon Detective Pikachu live action movie trailer: Deadpool meets Harry Potter

The first Pokemon Detective Pikachu trailer today revealed the only better choice for Pikachu's voice than Danny DeVito. It's Ryan Reynolds, also known as Deadpool. Sure, Reynolds was in movies before Deadpool, but never before did he so embody a role as that – that'll almost certainly be his magnum opus. But as a voice actor, Reynolds might've found something even better.

Today we're looking at the first major trailer for Pokemon Detective Pikachu. This is a live action movie that stars Pikachu and his best budy, a guy by the name of Tim. Tim is played by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom star Justice Smith, the only person in the whole world that can understand what Pikachu is saying. Everyone else still hears just "pika pika!"

Also in the mix is a character called Lucy, as played by Kathryn Newton, and the legendary Ken Watanabe. He's been in such films as Batman Begins, Godzilla, and Inception, and you'll recognize his voice immediately. His voice makes the story seem quite epic at first – the perfect counter-point to what comes next.

The story has the father of the star of the movie gone missing. That's "ace private eye Harry Goodman" and it's time for his son, Tim Goodman, to take action! So he's gotta team up with his father's former detective partner!

Which is Pikachu.

Or rather "Detective Pikachu" as he's called in the movie. Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure Reynolds was typecast for this movie, after his several recent roles that were more or less Deadpool-esque. "Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself." Sound like anyone you know?

Also the film definitely has a bit of a mysterious and magical feel to it, the likes of which I've not seen since the Harry Potter franchise left theaters. So long as this film nails that mystery and magic, they'll have a franchise on their hands. Another franchise, that is to say – after the 10-billion franchises the Pokemon Company already nabbed in every other media type around the world.

This movie will be released to the USA on May 11th, 2019. Until then we'll likely see more trainers and information than we know what to do with. This isn't the sort of movie we're going to have to hide from to avoid leaks, because there's not a whole lot at stake. People are going to see this movie almost no matter what.
