Oculus Venues reveals World Cup VR plans

Oculus Venues is only a few weeks old (officially at least) but it's definitely sprinting out of the gate. Oculus Venues is a way to watch and "attend" live events using your VR headset, and Oculus is getting the ball rolling with perhaps the event to end all events: the World Cup. If you're trying to discover if there's an audience for sports streaming via VR, hosting the biggest sports event in the world is a good way to find out.

Assuming you've got an Oculus Go or a Gear VR headset, you'll be able to watch a grand total of four World Cup matches through Oculus Venues. In the US, the games will be provided by Fox Sports. Have a look at the full schedule of games that will be available through Oculus Venues below:

June 17: Germany vs. Mexico – 8:00 am PT

June 20: Portugal vs. Morocco – 5:00 am PT

June 22: Brazil vs. Costa Rica – 5:00 am PT

June 24: England vs. Panama – 5:00 am PT

While that's just a small sampling of all the games that will be played during the World Cup, this Oculus Venues promotion should offer an interesting spin on your typical viewing party. For those who aren't acquainted with Oculus Venues yet, the app gives you the option of watching along with avatars representing other viewers, adding something of a social aspect to these events.

Elsewhere in the world, a number of companies will be making these games available through apps of their own. In the UK, for instance, you'll be able to watch on Oculus Go and Gear VR using the BBC's app. DIRECTV Sports VR, on the other hand, will be handling the streaming duties on Gear VR in regions including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, and Venuzuela. For the full list of regions and apps that will be carrying World Cup matches, have a look at the Oculus blog.
