Now MoviePass limits you to just six movie choices each day

MoviePass promised no more changes after its last confusing round of subscriber-frustrating alterations, so you'll be unsurprised to hear that the beleaguered company is shaking up the rules again. Having started out with the idea that it could make a business – and a profit – by offering unlimited access to movies on a subscription basis, MoviePass has since dialed down the viewing freedom considerably.

Now, in a quiet announcement this morning, MoviePass has changed once more how subscribers can use the service. Now, only six movies will be eligible for viewing each day. These will change on a daily basis, with MoviePass confirming the upcoming roster for the next 10-11 days.

So, today for instance, subscribers will be able to get tickets for Blackkklansman, The Meg, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, We The Animals, Skate Kitchen, Juliet, Naked, and Summer of 84. If they were hoping to see something else, however, they'll have to wait until those titles are added to the schedule – if that happens at all.

It follows MoviePass adjusting its rules earlier this week, applying a new cap on exactly how many showings subscribers will be able to attend. As of August 15, only three movies per month will be allowed on the $9.95/mo plan. Any further tickets bought through the service will get a $2-5 discount.

Quarterly and annual subscribers won't be affected by the three movie per month change until their plans come up for renewal, though they will still be impacted by this switch to six eligible films per day. Those on the $7.95/mo capped plan, which was already limited to three movies per month, will have to switch to the $9.95/mo plan or end their service altogether. One upside is that MoviePass is ending Peak Pricing and Ticket Verification, two of the previously-tried systems which proved particularly unpopular with users.

According to MoviePass, this six movie per day limit will stick around while the company is in a "transition period" to the new subscription scheme, however long that takes. The app will always show the current day's selection, while the website will have a fuller schedule of at least the week to come.

"During this transition period, MoviePass will offer up to six films to choose from daily, including a selection of major studio first-run films and independent releases," the company confirmed. "In addition, showtime availability may be limited depending on the popularity of those films on the app that particular day."

It's unclear just how long this transition period will take, and thus how long the six movies per day choice will be in effect. What seems a whole lot more certain is that this is likely to go down badly with MoviePass subscribers.
