MoviePass annual subscribers forced onto restricted monthly plans

MoviePass has successfully angered more of its customers by forcing those who paid for an annual membership to switch over to a month-to-month plan. Until now, customers who had purchased the annual subscription were grandfathered into the older terms, enabling them to watch whatever movie they wanted whenever they wanted. With this change, those customers are now forced to follow the limitations of the monthly plan.READ: Now MoviePass limits you to just six movie choices each day

MoviePass, which was heavily criticized during its brief moment of popularity, has faced substantial financial issues. In an effort to survive, the company has rolled out an increasingly more restrictive series of changes that limit how many — and which — movies subscribers can see.

Shortly before all of this started, though, the company had launched an annual plan that enabled customers to buy an entire year's subscription outright.

As the new changes were implemented, those annual customers continued to enjoy the mostly unrestricted access of the original MoviePass service, something that would have persisted until their renewal date, at which point a switch to the monthly plan would happen. MoviePass has changed that, sending an email to annual subscribers alerting them to its latest major change.

Annual subscribers have the option of either remaining with the company on the heavily restricted month-to-month plan or cancelling their membership and getting a prorated refund. Under the new plan, customers can only watch three movies per 30 days with blackouts on first-run blockbusters and more.
