Lyft is testing ride passes with frequent riders

Lyft has a new experiment that may make it more attractive to frequent users: ride passes of sort that lock in certain per-ride rates depending on how much you spend. The idea here is that, assuming you use the service frequently, you can save money in a way similar to bus and train passes, bringing your overall travel costs down. Such an arrangement may be necessary to secure daily or near-daily repeat customers.

Lyft detailed the new 'Line Passes' on its blog, saying it is testing this as one of apparently multiple 'different types of membership passes.' The test is running for the month of November, meaning next month is your only chance to try it out, at least in the immediate future. They apply to all Lyft Line rides.

Those who use the service frequently would be best off with the $29 Line Pass, which covers all the ride costs so that they're 'free.' The other one is a bit cheaper at $20 upfront, and this one reduces the per-ride cost to $2 for the month...still a good deal if your typical rides are more expensive than that.

To get one, you must buy it before the sale ends on October 31. As well, only a limited quantity are available and they're limited to Washington DC, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, San Diego, and Los Angeles. If you do get a pass, it will automatically be applied starting on November 1. It isn't clear whether Lyft plans to expand these passes in the future, or if this will end up being a one-shot deal.
