Lucky Bag: Apple Hasn't Given Up On TV Just Yet
Apple's Lucky Bag promotion for Japan is underway, and the contents of the bags have been revealed. This year, the top-end bags will get an 11-inch MacBook Air with 128GB memory, as well an Air Jacket case, Incase Slim backpack, Powerbeats2 wireless headphones, a Mophie Powerstation Juice Pack, and a TwelveSouth PlugBug. There are second and third-tier bags as well (Apple's not just going to give out MacBooks to everyone), but one aspect of the Lucky Bag promo stuck out to us: the Apple TV.
Second-tier bags get an iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3, either having 16GB memory, and an Ultimate Ears Boom Bluetooth speaker. The third-tier bag comes with an iPod Touch and iTunes gift card.
Each bag costs $320 or so (¥38,000).
The second and third-tier bags all get the non-MacBook add-ons, too. Each has an Incase backpack, Mophie Powerstation, Powerbeats2, and Apple TV.
It's the Apple TV inclusion that has us curious, though. After many pundits assumed Apple had given up on TV altogether, the Apple TV has stuck around. It even landed a dedicated home on the Apple Store, and Apple has brought more content to the box via partnerships with Conde Nast, the NFL, and UFC.
Apple TV is set to receive some HomeKit love in a future update, so seeding the device to all Lucky Bag purchasers could be a sneaky way to gift home automation. As more manufacturers jump on the HomeKit bandwagon, the platform becomes much more desirable.
