LG's odd TONE Studio wireless headset begins its global launch

Around-the-neck wireless headsets have always been strange to look at but surprisingly effective. It combines the freedom of movement provided by wireless earbuds with the controls and structure of conventional headphones. LG, whose TONE headsets embrace this design, believes it can still improve on this concept. At CES earlier this year, it unveiled two new TONEs. One of those, the LG TONE Studio, is finally going on sale this week to bring its surround sound capabilities to your neck.

Yes, the TONE Studio promises to deliver "incredibly rich surround sound". It does that by actually having four speakers in side the collar structure itself. Two of those are located right below the wearer's ears and are two full range speakers. The other two are located below the collar and vibrates against the wearer's collarbone.

The TONE Studio studio still has earbuds you can pull out, it seems. But that's being reserved for very personal and secluded listening. For instances where users need to also be aware of ambient sound, or just want to enjoy some semblance of surround sound, the four speakers are the way to go.

Of course, that means that others nearby will most likely hear what you're listening to but won't get to enjoy the same surround effect. Unless they actually have their own TONE Studio headset. In that case, LG's Dual Play feature allows two TONE Studios to pair up and share the same audio source.

The LG TONE Studio launches first in the Middle East this week, followed by North America before the month ends. Asia and Latin America will get the headset in April and Europe gets it last in May. Prices have not been announced.
