LG CDMA watch passes FCC, may be for Verizon
When it comes to smartwatches, the mindset for some tends to gravitate toward ditching the smartphone. Connected wearables are nothing new, but the platform still doesn't offer a full suite of apps and services to get us away from our pocket-ready slates. That's not stopping LG, though, who appear to be working on a smartwatch that has a radio inside.
Dubbed the VC100, this smartwatch has just slipped through the FCC process. LG's effort isn't going to be groundbreaking, though. A 3G connection isn't the speedy LTE many are looking for, but likely keeps cost down.
The sketch provided shows a rectangular watch that looks much more Acer than LG. Slightly rectangular, it's got some rounded edges to soften what will likely be a very abrupt rectangular screen. If so, that means more bezel.
Another oddity is the model on test is CDMA. Currently, the only carriers worth mention in the US that operate on CDMA are Verizon and Sprint. The only two of those two who are likely to have a smartwatch tied to their technology is Verizon, so we're left to wonder fi this is going to be a Verizon exclusive.
It could simply be the test model, and a sister product for a GSM version, but that's not yet known. CNET is citing a source close to myLGphones.com as having seen this model in a database listed alongside other Verizon devices.
LG isn't first to the connected smartwatch realm, and joins Samsung as the only other major OEM to provide us with one. We're certain this will be Android Wear, and with 3G instead of LTE, could be priced right for you to want to leave your phone at home.
