Lenovo's Moto X moment: going stock Android on all phones

Lenovo's next mobile move is putting pure stock Android on all of its phones – all with Lenovo's brand, anyway. This should make a significant difference in how serious the brand is taken and how much of a cult following the brand has – or will have. Without a doubt there is a major subset of Android device users who desire – and are vocal about their desire for – the most basic version of the mobile operating system available.

Lenovo MGB India Head of Product Marketing Anuj Sharma spoke this week with NDTV's Gadgets 360 blog. "There was a certain trend and we have now decided to cut the Vibe Pure UI off from our phones," said Sharma. "So you will now get the stock Android which consumers have been asking for."

This stripping off of manufacturer-made user interface has gone fairly well for Motorola. Launched with the Moto X, the first big smartphone release made once Motorola was owned by Google, a nearly-stock Android made the device a stand-out hit. Motorola has since been acquired by Lenovo, who now also seem to be seeing the light.

"The stock Android will also mean that it will be more efficiently updated to next Android OS," said Sharma. "It also makes it easier to support for extended period of time."

Cross your fingers for a multi-year software update from the brand – that'd go a LONG way for Lenovo gaining a strong smartphone user following. Sharma also "confirmed" this week that Lenovo's K series of smartphones will get an Android O update – at one time or another – scheduling to be decided soon.
