Jaguar Classic D-Type Gallery

Jaguar Classic is bringing an icon back to life, filling in the gaps in the automaker's racing car history. The British company has announced it will be producing 25 D-type race cars, completing the intended 100 car run from the 1950s. At the time, only 75 were completed.

Like previous "New Original" continuation cars, the E-type and XKSS, the "new" D-type cars will be identical in specification to those produced back in the 50s. That includes basing the design – which will be offered in both Shortnose and Longnose form – on the original blueprints, and making the whole thing by hand. First off, there's this engineering prototype, which has acted as a test case for the UK-based team.

The D-type won the Le Mans 24 Hours race three times between 1955 and 1957, using Jaguar's six-cylinder XK engine. Pricing for the reborn cars has not been confirmed at this point, though production is set to kick off later this year. Still, with originals fetching millions at auction, they're unlikely to come cheap.
