Hyundai patent outlines speed bump detection system

I'd wager at one time or another most of us have seen cars that have been customized by their owners or are so low from the factory that speed bumps can be a big issue. Even more annoying are larger speed bumps that are the same color as the road around them allowing them to blend into the surroundings to the point that many people hit them at full speed simply because they don't see them.Hyundai has a patent that outlines a system that detects speed bumps using several bits of tech that are already available on cars today. The tech that combines for the speed bump detection system is GPS, a camera, and varied sensors. That hardware detects the coming speed bump and measures its height, width, and curvature.

The software will then calculate the speed the car needs to be traveling to drive over the bump safely. When the driver is going too fast, warnings will tell them to slow down. For most of us in most locations, this tech doesn't seem particularly valuable.

However, in the autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicle future being able to identify speed bumps and drive over them at an appropriate speed is a major issue. Granted the patent says nothing about autonomous vehicle use, but we can read between the lines.
