GameFly and LG team to stream cloud-based console games to TVs

LG has announced that it has teamed up with GameFly for a new game streaming service that will shoot console quality video games to owners of some of its webOS enabled Smart TVs. The streaming will happen via a special GameFly app that will launch in late April in the US. With the app installed, LG Smart TV owners will be able to access premium console gaming content on the LG OLED and LCD/LED TVs running webOS.

"The addition of GameFly to the extensive variety of content options, including leading video and music applications, available on LG Smart TVs further enhances the LG Smart TV experience," said David VanderWaal, vice president of marketing, LG Electronics USA. "LG Smart TV owners will have the ability to stream high-quality video games right to their TV and enjoy a next-gen console-like experience in the comfort of their home."

The GameFly Streaming App will work on 2016 Smart TVs with webOS 3.0 and 2015 Smart TV models running webOS 2.0 by adding the app as part of a software update landing in late April. With the app installed, gamers won't need to buy and setup consoles connected to their TVs. GameFly says that app will let gamers play the games they want at a fraction of the normal cost.

The app will have a monthly fee associated with it and there will be GameFly streaming packs bundling popular games together. Games that can be found in bundles include Tomb Raider: Game of the Year Edition, Batman: Arkham Origins, F.E.A.R. 3, Darksiders and Red Faction Armageddon. GameFly recommends the Logitech F310, Logitech F710, or Xbox wired controller to control the streaming games. It's unclear exactly how much the monthly fee will be for game streaming.
