Fujifilm X-A5 mirrorless camera launches: 24MP, 4K video, retro design

Fujifilm has launched the X-A5 mirrorless camera, the lightest and smallest zoom camera found in its X-Series, according to the company. This model sports a retro design, but with a compact style that pairs well with the large zoom lens. Buyers get a 24MP APS-C sensor alongside some prosumer-tier features, including optical image stabilization and 4K video recording.

While smartphones are the camera of choice for many consumers, so-called "prosumer" cameras trump them namely in the lens department. While the lens found on smartphones is tiny, the one included on dedicated zoom cameras like this aren't and the image quality benefits from it. The Fujifilm X-A5 features a FUJINON XC15-45mm f/3.5 – 5.6 OIS PZ lens.

According to Fujifilm, this new X-Series model features an all-new 24.2MP APS-C sensor alongside the maker's image processing engine. Buyers will experience better accuracy in scene recognition versus past models in SR+ AUTO mode, Fujifilm says, as well as better skin tone reproduction and color reproduction.

The company has boosted ISO range up to ISO12800, giving it better low-light potential while keeping noise and blurs to a minimum. Another "first" for the X-A Series is the addition of phase detection pixels, which was previously reserved for Fujifilm's higher-end X-Series models. Users get double the Intelligent Hybrid AF speed, as well.

Other Fujifilm X-A5 features include a large 3-inch rear LCD with a 180-degree rotating hinge, plus a command dial on the rear with the ability to automatically engage the Shutter Release and Zoom functions. When the screen is rotated, the camera automatically enables Eye AF for focusing on a subject's eyes — this is said to produce better selfie quality.

The camera is available to preorder now for $599.99 USD.
