Flipboard video ads pilot program kicks off today

Flipboard, the snazzy magazine app, has added video advertisements to its roster, following in line with other big-name services that have rolled them out in recent months. The ads have launched today, with Flipboard saying it has eight different brands on board to kick it off.

Fortunately, it seems the video ads won't auto-play, instead featuring a Play button if the user is curious to watch the content. This is a pilot program, Flipboard points out, and a wider expansion of the program won't start until November 1 of this year.

The brands users will be seeing ads from includes Sony Pictures, Chrysler, Gucci, and Lufthansa, among others. The ads will look like the Gucci example featured above, being a "full-page mobile ad experience", says Flipboard.

For now, users will be seeing full-page video ads in the service's most popular sections, including News and Entertainment. The places these ads will be surfacing will expand in coming months, as will, presumably, the number of brands that utilize them.
