Dark Souls for Nintendo Switch heading for release

One of the most surprising announcements to come out of today's Direct Mini features a game that most of us probably never expected to see on a Nintendo console. Nintendo revealed that Dark Souls: Remastered is on the way for the Switch, bringing the immensely popular series to Nintendo hardware for the first time. We're not sure why you'd want to subject yourself to Dark Souls' brutal gameplay a second time, but hey, now you can do it on the go.

Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot of information about Dark Souls: Remastered out there just yet. The reveal consists of a teaser trailer that lasts for just a few seconds, with no gameplay shown. Still, most people should know what the Souls series is about by now, either through having played it on their own or watching others subject themselves to Dark Souls' famous brand of brutality.

Even though the teaser doesn't show us any gameplay footage, it does give us an important detail by revealing a release date. You won't have to wait very long to play Dark Souls on your Switch, as the game will launch on May 25, 2018 here in the US.

At this point, we're not sure if From Software and Namco Bandai will elect to bring the other two games in the series to Nintendo Switch. It seems like a safe bet given the Switch's popularity, but until we get official confirmation, it's probably best to avoid getting expectations too high. Some Dark Souls is better than no Dark Souls, though, so we're sure people will be happy with this announcement even if we aren't sure if we'll ever see the rest of the series on the Switch.

Getting a franchise as popular as Dark Souls ported over to the Switch is a big win for Nintendo, so don't be surprised to see the company's hype machine kick into full gear shortly. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before we're able to snag a glimpse of Dark Souls: Remastered running on the Switch, so stay tuned for that.
