Chevrolet Gran Turismo Chaparral 2X Vision concept car revealed

This week Chevrolet has revealed the Chaparral 2X VGT concept car, a vehicle designed specifically for the Vision Gran Turismo project. This vehicle was developed exclusively for fans of the PlayStation racing game Gran Turismo 6, and is indeed a fully working vehicle. It's certainly not made for the production lines in the long term – instead, it's made to be a one of a kind beast never to be replicated outside of the digital landscape – inside the Gran Turismo video game, that is to say.

This concept was "inspired by the innovative race cars Chaparral Racing and Chevrolet partnered on more than 45 years ago." As if the past's vision of the future is coming back to remind us of what might have been.

Inside this vehicle is a mid-mounted laster beam-energy propulsion system. For real. Science-fiction sort of stuff made real. This system "pulses beams of light that focus in a shroud, creating shock waves that generate tremendous thrust."

Bruce Wayne eat your heart out.

This system is powered by lithium-ion batteries and works with a 671-kW laser. You'll also have an air-powered generator made to provide 900 horsepower worth of thrust.

In-game – in Gran Turismo 6 – you'll be able to achieve a 0-60 acceleration capability of 1.5 seconds and a 240-mph top speed.

"The Chaparral 2X VGT is a vision of how advanced technology may shape the look and driving experience of racing," says Frank Saucedo, GM Design Director of Advanced Design. He continued, "Chaparral's race cars and methods were seen as outlandish four decades ago... [but] the Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo concept might just be a harbinger of motorsports in the next four decades."

You can access the Chaparral 2X VGT on your PlayStation 3 next month by downloading an online update for Gran Turismo 6. At this time an exact release date has not been shared.
