Chevrolet Colorado adds RST and Z71 Trail Runner special editions

Chevy has revealed two new special editions of its Colorado truck, focusing on both off-road and street drivers to mark the four year anniversary of the pickup nameplate's return. The midsize truck was relaunched in late 2014, and since then almost 430,000 have been sold, Chevrolet said today.

For the road, there's the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado RST. That picks up where other RST editions leave off, like the Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado. It's based on the Colorado's existing LT trim.

For the special edition, Chevy adds a monochromatic exterior offset package, with a black belt line, and body side moldings. The tailgate gets black badging, for the bowtie, Colorado, and RST badging. It also adds 20-inch wheels – a first for the truck – finished in low-gloss black.

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Trail Runner, meanwhile, is arguably even more interesting. First, Chevy takes a Colorado Z71 off-road package, to which it then adds the underbody protection from the Colorado ZR2. It also gets stamped aluminum front and mid skid plates, together with functional rocker protection. 17-inch Goodyear Duratrac tires finish things off.

It slots into what's now a growing line-up of off-road Colorado options. Those needing only the basics have the Colorado Z71, with its off-road suspension and automatic locking rear differential. Chevy also outfits that with 17-inch all-terrain tires.

Next comes the Colorado Z61 Trail Runner, and after that the Colorado ZR2. Things get more serious there, with a 3.5-inch wider track and a 2-inch suspension lift. Front and rear electronic locking differentials come standard on the ZR2, too, along with Multimatic DSSV dampers.

Finally, the Colorado ZR2 Bison cranks it up even further. Five hot-stamped Boron steel skid plates, along with stamped steel front and rear bumpers with front winch provisions and rear recovery points, make it Chevy's most rugged Colorado. It'll go on sale in early 2019.

Both the RST and the Z71 Trail Runner will get the ZR2 Bison's flow-through "CHEVROLET" lettered grille as well. Chevy will be offering that as an option for other Colorado models, too, priced at $395 before tax and installation. No word on pricing for the Colorado RST or Z71 Trail Runner at this point.
