BMW X4 family including M40i and M40d spied sans camo

A car hauler full of several versions of the BMW X4 has been spied somewhere near the BMW factory in South Carolina. The hauler was full of pre-production prototypes and while one of them appears to have been wearing mild camo on the front bumper, all of the others X4s on the hauler were completely bare.

The hauler had on it several versions of the X4, including the standard version, the M40i, and the M40d versions. The images show an X4 with a very sleek design looks similar to the 2018 BMW X3 that has already debuted. The X4 has only been around for a few model years as of now and normally at this point in the life-cycle of a model, we would expect to see a mild refresh. BMW has skipped that refresh and went for a full second generation of the X4.

With the hauler packing the hopped up M version, clearly BMW will be offering those models, presumably from the day the vehicle launches. Word is that the M40i will have a turbo inline-six displacing 3.0 liters taken right from the X3 M40i. In the X3 SUV the engine makes 355 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque with xDrive and an 8-speed automatic.

Performance in X30 M40i form is good with a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph. Performance in the X4 M40i is expected to be similar. The M40d flavor is diesel powered and exactly what engine is expected in that car is a point of debate. Rumors suggest that it will be a new quad-turbo 3.0L inline-six from the 750d.

In that car the engine makes 394 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque, but that output would presumably be detuned for duty in the X4 M40d. With the X4s sitting on the trailer completely unhidden we would assume the official unveil is close, or perhaps someone simply was slacking on camo duty.
