BMW i8 Roadster crosses the Alps in latest teaser

We know that BMW is working on a roadster version of its i8 hybrid sports car and it has teased the vehicle a few times. The last teaser came back in July and at the time the car was clad in camo, but we could see a bit of detail. The car has the cool doors that the coupe version offers, in that teaser there were removable panels on the top.

This time out BMW has posted a video to its Facebook page that shows several i8 Roadster test vehicles in testing on tracks and cruising mountain roads. It's hard to see any real details the cars, the camera cuts in and out on the Roadster too fast for that. Thankfully BMW does offer up some details on the car.

We already knew the i8 Roadster was coming in 2018, but BMW again makes that clear. Preliminary figures for the car include that it is a plug-in hybrid car and it promises 15.4 kWh/100km energy consumption combined. Fuel consumption combined is 2.0L/100km, and combined CO2 emissions are 45 g/kg. All those fuel economy numbers are eased on the ECE driving cycle with a third urban traffic and two-thirds extra-urban driving.

The i8 Roadster styling is expected to be based on the styling of the refreshed i8 Coupe and a bump in power is expected. Rumors point to 372 hp and a bump in all-electric driving range over the anemic 15-mile range of the current car is expected.

As for pricing, that is a mystery. The i8 Coupe is around $143,000 and it's common for Roadsters to carry a premium so a higher price is expected. There is no word on an exact launch date for the car.
