…and that is not a typo. Back in the early days of smartphones, Blackberry was the undisputed heavy-weight champion. Everybody who was anybody at the time owned a Blackberry phone. One of the main features of Blackberry’s was the keyboard; as tiny as it was, but people loved typing away on it. Hoping to recapture some of that former glory, A company called Typo introduced an iPhone case that makes your phone look eerily like a Blackberry. Online posts and comments started, and Of course, Blackberry saw it as well. They were not too amused by this, resulting in a major lawsuit in January last year. The former king of cell phones just won this lawsuit and now Typo has to pay up.
It was decided last Tuesday that the Typo products resembled their Blackberry counterparts just a bit too much, and thus the case manufacturer was ordered to pay the hefty sum of $860,000 to Blackberry. Ouch!
It is said that imitation is the greatest form of flattery, however, Typo might have taken the flattery a bit too far this time, and are now paying through the nose for it. A Typo representative commented that the company was disappointed but would “continue to make and sell innovative products that busy people can’t live without”.
How this will impact Typo’s future products, or even their future as a company remains to be seen. For now, however, all Typo1 cases are nowhere to be found on their online store, but the Typo2 keyboard cases are still up for grabs, and actually are getting some very positive reviews. For all you former Blackberry lovers out there, head over to their Online Store for getting your own.
