Apple's Union Square store approved

Today San Francisco's Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors finalized Apple's Union Square store plans, giving it a thumbs up on its plan to construct a new store set to trump New York's notable glass cube Apple Store. Word on when construction will kick off has it pegged for summer.

Once built, the upcoming store will clock in at over 24,800 square feet, and will be positioned on the Union Square corner betwixt Stockton and Post. The store will out-size the company's Ellis and Stockton store, and will take an estimated 400 or so workers to run — again, a boost over the current store.

This follows the approval vote for the so-called "flagship" store that passed in early February. The construction will involve moving the historic fountain located in the plaza, among other things. Now that the final approval is in, Apple can start tearing into the current buildings whenever it decides to initiate construction.

Said Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette to Re/code: "We are thrilled that the city of San Francisco has given its final approval to begin work on our new store and public plaza, which will make a wonderful addition to Union Square and create hundreds of local jobs. Our Stockton Street store has been incredibly popular, welcoming over 13 million customers since it opened nine years ago, and we look forward to making a new home on Union Square."
