This one day iPhone X deal undercuts a new iPhone XR

Apple may have hustled the iPhone X out of its range when it launched the iPhone XS a few months ago, but a new Amazon deal for the 2017 flagship could sway you from spending too much on a new phone. The iPhone X launched Apple's new notched aesthetic, as well as hardware like the TrueDepth camera, but it also ushered in a high price for new phones.

That has served Apple well, with the iPhone XS launching from $999 this year, too. Hopes that the iPhone X would, as previous Apple flagships have, be shifted down in the line-up as a more affordable iPhone were dashed, however. Instead, Apple launched the iPhone XR.

Now, though, Amazon's deal of the day could put an iPhone X in your pocket and save you some money in the process. The retailer is offering refurbished iPhone X handsets, SIM-free and unlocked, today. In the process it's undercutting the original sticker price considerably: almost by a quarter, in some cases.

The iPhone X 64GB, for instance, is $725 unlocked. It's available in Space Gray or Silver, and will work with any GSM carrier in the US. If you want more storage space, the iPhone X 256GB is also available, for $829 unlocked.

There's no denying that the iPhone XR is a tempting option if you're in the market for a more affordable new iPhone. Undercutting this year's flagships, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, by at least $250, the iPhone XR keeps the same styling – and even offers a larger, albeit lower-resolution, display than the XS – and niceties like the TrueDepth front camera for Face ID. It's also available in a range of brighter colors than we've seen from Apple's smartphones over the past few years.

Still, up against even last year's iPhone X, we know which one we'd go for. The slightly thinner bezels and stainless steel casing of the iPhone X give it a more premium look in your hand than the iPhone XR. Meanwhile, with iOS 12 released for the older phone, even with a slightly older processor you're still getting pretty much the same software experience.

In other areas, the iPhone X is still ahead. Its dual camera system means you're getting Apple's full Portrait mode, for example, unlike the software-powered – and feature-limited – version for the iPhone XR's single rear camera. You also get the 2x optical zoom, which can be very useful.

As with all of Amazon's deal of the day promotions, this price cut on refurbished iPhones won't last longer than, well, a day. Even with Black Friday approaching, it's questionable whether you'll find a better cut on the iPhone X.
