Amazon Music Unlimited rolls out family subscription plans

Amazon Music Unlimited has wasted little time in taking the fight to established streaming services. Today Amazon announced a new family subscription plan for the service, barely a month after Music Unlimited rolled out in the US. Like other family plan subscriptions, this one will let multiple folks use Music Unlimited for one monthly fee, rather than shelling out for numerous individual accounts.

Amazon Music Unlimited will allow for six different users on the same subscription. Notably, that's the same number of users Google Play's family plan allows, for the same price as well: $14.99 per month. That $15 monthly fee applies to both Prime and non-Prime users, though Amazon offers a yearly subscription for Prime users that comes in at $149 per year.

Essentially, opting for the yearly plan allows you to shave around $30 off the monthly price, meaning you get two months for free. It isn't a massive savings, but it might be enough to convince folks who know they'll use whatever service they subscribe to for an extended period of time. It's worth pointing out that this family plan costs the same as Spotify's as well, putting Amazon right on the level of its competitors.

Even though the family subscriptions from all three services are the same price, Amazon is hoping to tap into its existing Prime subscriber base to grow Music Unlimited quickly. While the service is $9.99 per month for non-Prime members, those who are subscribed to Prime only have to pay $7.99 per month. Those plans exist alongside a $3.99 per month subscription that allows Music Unlimited on a single Echo, Echo Dot, or Amazon Tap.

Built-in Alexa support is another feature Amazon hopes will pull people in. Users can ask Alexa to play specific songs or search for songs they don't know the title of by providing Alexa with a few lyrics. With Amazon boasting a library of over 40 million songs, we'll see if these extra features and plans are enough to tempt people away from Google and Spotify.
