Amazon free music streaming expands to Fire TV and mobile

Earlier this year, Amazon announced that its Amazon Music service was now free (with advertisements) for anyone who owned a smart speaker featuring its Alexa personal assistant. Amazon has expanded that perk to its wider ecosystem, namely the Fire TV platform, as well as on Android and iOS using the Amazon Music app. Users aren't required to have an Amazon Music Unlimited or Amazon Prime membership.READ: Amazon Music is now free with ads for Alexa device owners

In April, Amazon announced that Amazon Music was free to stream with advertisements on Alexa-enabled devices like the company's Echo smart speakers.

The announcement came on the same day that Google revealed its Home speaker owners could stream music from YouTube Music for free, underscoring the competition between the two.

In a statement on Monday, Amazon said that its Amazon Music service is now free with ads for users in the US, UK, and Germany through Fire TV and on mobile, joining the previously offered playback on the web and Alexa devices. As mentioned, customers don't need a subscription; Amazon says there's no need to provide a credit card, either.

The free access covers what Amazon described as a 'selection' of some of the top-rated stations and playlists available through the Amazon Music platform. This includes some holiday music in time for the holiday season, as well as hits and music across a number of genres.

The Amazon Music app functions exactly how you'd expect; the Fire TV platform, meanwhile, enables users to press a button to summon Alexa, which can retrieve the requested music, no additional clicking necessary. As mentioned, you can also access this free selection of music on an Echo or similar device, though you'll need an Amazon Music Unlimited subscription to get rid of the advertisements and access the full music library.
