Alien Blue app now Reddit Official

For those of you working with an iPhone or iPad this week, congratulations. You're the first ones able to access an official Reddit app. This app is called Alien Blue, and Reddit just acquired it officially. This app had been available before – and it's not changed much since Reddit picked it up – but now Reddit owns it. And that makes it just so much better. So, so much better than before. So much more official and better – for iOS only. For now.

This app was created by Alien Blue lead developer Jase Morrissey – pictured here with a koala – who now joins the Reddit development team officially as well. Apparently he's actually been "working closely" with Reddit for years.

"G'day folks! I'm Jase, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining the very talented reddit crew," says Morrissey, "I'm the developer of Alien Blue and have been working closely with reddit for many years now. ...Now that I'm an official member of the team, I'm hoping to spend even more time doing what I love – building fun and powerful software for all of you."

Starting this week – as of October 15th, 2014 – the Reddit Alien Blue iOS app will have an "Alien Blue Pro" upgrade free for 7 days. After that, it'll cost you. The Pro account unlock includes the following features:

• Switch between multiple reddit accounts easily

• Browse in Gallery mode (formerly Canvas)

• Discover subreddits by topic or interest

• Expand all images in the comments with one tap

• Quote comments in one tap

• Exclude posts based on keywords

• "Hide All / Hide Read" comments with one tap

The iPad app – also still called Alien Blue – is free until the two apps become one. At that time they'll... still be free, but you'll probably want to toss the old iPad app and get the new integrated app. That'll happen in the near future.

This app joins the AMA app as one of two official Reddit apps in any app store. iTunes Reddit collection includes Alien Blue, Alien Blue for iPad, and Reddit AMA. Reddit's Google Play collection for Android just includes AMA for now.

For those of you looking for an official Reddit app for Android – you'll just have to wait. For now we recommend Flow for Reddit or the tiny-but-effective Reddit is Fun.
