There's nothing like a well-detailed car. The only problem is that it can get pretty expensive to get car detailing done professionally as often as you'd like. That's why it's worth building yourself a car-detailing setup at home. You just have to know what products you can trust... and which products aren't actually worth your time.

We spoke to car detailing experts including Justin Glass, owner of Fort Lauderdale Precise Mobile Auto Detailing, to get some practical advice on this. Of the products Glass recommends, he would pick Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam as the best single choice for someone caring for a vehicle at home.

Glass has been providing professional detailing since 2004, and he says Gentle Snow Foam stands out because it fits naturally into a regular washing routine. His reasoning is simple: Washing is the one task you're going to be doing most often, so getting that part of the process right is much more valuable to a home detailing setup than some specialty product that only gets used occasionally.

Products you need (and products you can avoid)

Another reason professional detailer Justin Glass recommends Gentle Snow Foam is the way its pH-neutral formula cleans without removing wax or sealant. Glass also says it can be used either with a foam sprayer or as a traditional bucket shampoo, which means you don't have to invest in a ton of extra equipment just to use it.

Glass also recommends Koch-Chemie Pol Star for cleaning interiors, diluted Shine Supply Solution for heavier-duty cleaning, and Shine Supply Cool Guy for brake dust and iron contamination on the wheels. He also likes Shine Supply Clutch for paint protection.

Our expert also has some advice on products to avoid as you build out your at-home car-detailing kit. He says to be wary of buying large kits simply because they contain more bottles. For a beginner, too many overlapping products can just create more expense for you without adding much practical benefit.

Instead, to detail your vehicle like a pro, Glass recommends starting with just a car shampoo, clean wash mitt, two buckets, and a quality microfiber drying towel. If you want, you can also add wheel cleaner, interior cleaner, and automotive glass cleaner to top it all off. Wax, sealant, machine polishers, ceramic-coating kits... Glass says you can keep those detailing accessories in the garage for later, only after the washing and drying routine is under control.
