2016 Hyundai Sonata PHEV: estimated 93MPGe, modest design
Hyundai has introduced its 2016 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, marking the maker's first foray into the plug-in hybrid EV market. The car brings with it a sharp design complemented by a Level 2 charger and the ability to travel about 22 miles on electric, trumping competing mid-size plug-in hybrid EVs in terms of range. This is achieved in part with the inclusion of a 9.8kWh battery pack, as well as a 50kWh electric motor. All in all, Hyundai expects the car to get a combined 93 MPGe rating.
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid EV features a six-speed auto transmission with the maker's Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device and the aforementioned electric motor. Says the auto maker, this 50kWh electric motor comes in more powerful than the Sonata Hybrid's motor by a tune of 32-percent.
This is all joined by a 2-liter Nu 4-cylinder GDI engine, which brings 140lb-ft of torque and 154 horsepower. The mileage rating is an estimate at this point; the city mileage rating is expected to be 38mpg, while the highway is expected to be 43mpg when in charge-sustaining mode.
As far as the exterior goes, the Sonata PHEV will be available in Seaport Mist and Graphite Blue Pearl colors, and will offer both leather and cloth seat options, as well as contrast stitching for those who choose the Blue Pearl leather seats option. The model will be available later on this year.
