YouTube HDR support for iPhone X is quietly rolling out

YouTube has quietly introduced High Dynamic Range (HDR) support for the iPhone X. Some handset users report being able to view HDR videos using the latest and greatest iPhone model, hinting at a slow rollout that, unfortunately, hasn't made its way to the iPad Pro. Though it's not available to all users at this time, iPhone X users can check whether they have access via the app's "Quality" menu.

The support was spotted by MacRumors, where some iPhone X users reported getting access to HDR videos. The high dynamic range content can be found by opening a video, then tapping the "Quality" menu. Users are presented with various resolution options; anyone who has access to the HDR support will see the resolutions with "HDR" listed next to them, assuming the video itself is available in HDR.

YouTube has slowly introduced HDR support for the select number of phones that offer true HDR displays. The company has already launched the feature for several Android smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 handsets.

Netflix has also slowly added HDR support for mobile devices featuring an HDR display. The streaming service launched HDR support for the iPhone X, plus the iPhone 8 and iPad Pro, back in September. Though YouTube doesn't make it easy to find a list of supported devices, Netflix keeps a running list here.
