Yahoo earnings: 17% of revenue is from mobile ads

When Marissa Mayer took over at Yahoo, the company was in a tailspin. At first blush, her shopping spree after assuming control didn't seem to help. Spending big cash on properties like Tumblr seemed like they may do more harm than good. Now, with Yahoo's recent earnings report, we find out Mayer might have been taking a few steps back to start sprinting and get up to speed. Yahoo's numbers now reflect their mobile properties, and just how well they're doing for the once dominant search giant.

These mobile revenue numbers are the first time Yahoo has broken them out from the big picture, so you'd have to assume they're proud of what's been going on. They should be, too. Mobile ads brought in over $200 million in Q3 2014.

That's about 17% of their total revenue, which Yahoo says will top $1.2 billion in FY 2014.

To date, Mayer has spent well over $1 billion on acquisitions for Yahoo, with their $1.1 billion Tumblr buy being the most sensational. Recent reports suggest Mayer and company are looking to leverage Tumblr against other properties it's not yet competing with, and suggests a further monetization strategy for mobile.

This also shows Yahoo is well already positioned to compete in the mobile ad space. Google may be the big fish in the pond, and Apple's iAd might take up space alongside Facebook's new scheme, but Yahoo is also poised to take a piece of that pie. Already showing promise, there's no place to go but up.
