Windows gets open source Google Play Music desktop app

While all the web apps and services from Google are designed to run in the browser, sometimes its just easier to have some things running as a separate app, making for one less browser tab to sift through. That's how one developer must have felt when it comes to Google Play Music, as Windows users can now download a desktop app for the streaming service. The software is open source, so this is in no way an official app, and can be downloaded for free from GitHub.

The app does a good job of maintaining the style of Google's material design aesthetic, as well as allowing access to Play Music's free radio service. Unfortunately PC users will need to have Flash installed, but as long as they're running Windows Vista or later, they should be good.

The software is courtesy Australian developer Samuel Attard. It even works with a keyboard's media controls for play/pause and volume, and as VentureBeats notes, it can run on a Surface Pro 4.

While the app was first released back in July, Attard has been continually updating it since then. The latest version was released just last week, with features including a new dark theme, a settings window, and notifications for track changes.
