Universal's Jurassic Park will go 3D in 2013

The ultimate story for any fan of prehistoric action will be taking its wild adventure to the next dimension in 2013. Jurassic Park has been slated for a 3D remake, following in the footsteps of such other film masterpieces as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars, and Titanic. The studio is banking that 3D will not be going away anytime soon.

No doubt in some capacity, re-releasing classic films in 3D is just a way for studios to put proven sales juggernauts back in theaters for a guaranteed revenue stream. But then there's the other side, like Titanic. Director James Cameron has an objective with this year's theatrical re-release, which is to show studios the proper way to release a film in 3D even if it wasn't shot in 3D.

After all, the remake of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace drew criticism, as did first-run movies that added 3D conversions at the last minute for a quick buck, like Disney's new version of Alice in Wonderland. In other words, Jurassic Park's theatrical event in 2013 is going to make money. No doubt. The question that will be asked is whether it did it the right way – so fans could legitimately enjoy watching a classic title in a new way – or the wrong way, luring people in without much substance.
