UFO 50 Project Will Launch Collection Of New 8-Bit Games In 2018

Can't get enough classically-designed 8-bit games? Then the team behind UFO 50 has good news for you. The collective, which is comprised of five people, plan to create a collection of 50 individual multiplayer and single-player games, all of them in the 8-bit style of classic games, but with what the team describes as being 'new ideas and modern game design sensibilities.' The team is behind existing things like Spelunky, Madhouse, Skorpulac, and more.

You can get an idea of the types of games that will comprise UFO 50 via the announcement trailer below. If you've played any older game console, you'll be immediately familiar with the game style, though these will all be new titles. According to the team, the games that will comprise this collection will be a bit smaller than the 8-bit commercial titles that hit the market in the 1980s.

The UFO 50 team goes on to say that the games they will launch as part of this project will all be completed titles, not mini games or anything similar. The total of 50 games could require 50 hours at the least to finish, they explain; they will all be presented as the work of an ahead-of-its-time fiction company from the 80s, though of course that's just part of the fun.

Each of the 50 games will have a single-player mode, the developers say, and about 30-percent of them will also feature multiplayer modes of either the competitive or cooperative variety. All of these games will launch on the PC next year — specific date not stated — but there's indication they'll also be arriving on other platforms, likely the major consoles, at some point after that. The games will also be sold with some price tag, but the team hasn't decided what that will be yet.
