Two-Player Synthesizer Lets Players Sample And Battle Away
A keyboard synthesizer is normally something you play alone, unless you have someone else working the high keys chopsticks style. A device called the Collidoscope has been created by a couple musicians called Ben Bangler and Fiore Martin. This device turns playing a keyboard into a two-person affair.
It's more than just two people playing keyboards at the same time; it turns the processes into something a bit competitive. The Collidoscope has a knob for each player that allows them to pick a portion of whatever the other person is playing.
The idea is that using the device the two players can create a track without having to work on the music separately. The players play small keyboards that are offset and face each other. A long screen is directly above each of the keyboards and shows readout of what the player is playing.
The knob/sliders on each side allow the player to highlight what they are sampling. It's cool, but if you lack musical talent as I do it may be difficult to understand exactly what you are seeing. The video below helps explain things a bit better. The Collidoscope isn't available to purchase.
