Third-generation Apple TV goes the way of the dodo

If you were hoping to get your hands on the third-generation Apple TV, you are out of luck. The device has now been removed from the Apple online store and retired. Links that previously allowed users to get to the Apple TV 3 on the Apple website now redirect users to the fourth-generation Apple TV.

Apple confirmed the discontinuation of the device in an email that was sent to educators and employees. The third-generation Apple TV found popularity in the educational market thanks to its ability to mirror a teacher's computer screen via a projector or large display. If you previously ordered an Apple TV 3, the good news is that Apple says it will fulfill backorders for the device.

With the Apple TV 3 gone from stores, Apple will now put its marketing might behind the newer 4th generation device. Apple TV 3 has been on the market since 2012 and was updated with better specs the following year. The 4th generation Apple TV brought with it some nice new features including Siri support, the App Store and tvOS.

If your heart was set on the 3rd Gen Apple TV, there are still some refurbished devices to be had for $59. The fourth Generation Apple TV is much more expensive than refurbished 3rd generation devices. A 4th Gen Apple TV will cost you $149 for a 32GB version and $199 for a 64GB version. It's common for Apple to stop selling the older versions of its offerings once supplies run out.
