Obi Worldphone MV1: an entry-level phone for young professionals

If you think the world has enough smartphone models, Obi Worldphone would beg to differ. The company, which partly owes its 15 minutes of fame to former Apple CEO John Sculley, believes it has a point to sell, that beauty doesn't need to come at a higher price than normal. To prove that point, it is launching its third ever smartphone, the Obi Worldphone MV1, a smartphone that is, on paper, designed for young professionals in emerging markets. In practice, it bears a strange mix of low-end specs, a mid-range screen, and Obi Worldphone's odd design taste.

Intel’s 5G aspirations: mobile, PC, cloud, IoT, end-to-end

This week Intel appeared at MWC 2016 to speak largely about the imminent onset of 5G mobile data. They suggest that they are "one of the only industry players" that's able to deliver an end to end 5G solution. That means 5G hardware for smartphones, tablets, PC platforms, and M2M applications, expanded comms for IOT applications, and partnerships with companies like Ericsson, Korea Telecom, Nokia, SK Telecom, and Verizon. They're ready to roll right now. Ready to roll for 5G data.

If augmented reality is yet to make the market splash its VR cousin has, that's probably down to the relative shortcomings of transparent displays, but Epson's latest Moverio BT-300 suggests a tipping point is close. Ubuntu Phone gets ported to Xperia Z1, OnePlus One, more coming

Canonical and its Linux-based Ubuntu OS have recently received some attention via the announcement of the rather intriguing bq Aquaris M10 tablet. ZTE curiously silent on new Blade V7 smartphone at MWC 2016

MWC 2016 is usually an opportune time to put out your latest mobile related wares to take advantage of the synergy of energy, not to mention media attention, congregating in one single place. So it's a bit puzzling that ZTE is so far publicly silent about a new smartphone it has prepared. Especially considering it already unveiled a new projector earlier anyway. The landing page and details for a Blade V7 is apparently already available for public eyes. All that's left is for ZTE to actually make it official and make its availability known.

MWC 2016 will perhaps be remembered as the day when Sony redefined the Xperia brand.
