Frankfurt Motor Show 2017

Autonomous driving is huge right now, and Audi is accelerating into the age of self-driving vehicles across a wide range of abilities. First off was the recent Audi AI traffic jam pilot techday, where I got to experience Level 3 autonomy in real-world traffic jams and then hop into the driver seat to experience for myself what happens during the crucial 10 second hand-off period as the tech disengages. Now, at this year’s Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) motor show in Frankfurt, Audi is taking the wraps off its new Level 4 and 5 concept cars, Elaine and Aicon respectively, that illustrate its vision of future autonomous mobility.

VW is showing off a concept version of a zero emissions SUV that it plans to have on the market in 2020. The I.D. Crozz II will follow the first car in the I.D. family set for 2020, the basic I.D., that promises electric mobility with a big trunk. All of the vehicles in the I.D. family will use the same all-electric architecture with driving ranges aiming for 500 to 600 kilometers (up to 372 miles). If VW is able to hit that range, it should do well in the EV market.

VW is working hard to come back from the diesel emission scandal and with the raging popularity of crossovers, we knew VW was getting into that market. VW's crossover is now official and it is called the T-Roc promising to combine the "dominance of an SUV with the dynamism of a compact hatchback." The T-Roc will be packed with safety tech including Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Lane Assist as standard equipment.

VW is getting official with the new 2018 Polo GTI at IAA. The Polo GTI packs a 197hp (200 PS) turbo engine that makes 320 Nm of torque. The car gets a fully digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch display that has a red-white-black design in a Sport theme. All instruments are on a single visual plain and infotainment integrates with a driver's smartphone. Wireless charging of smartphones is featured.

The 2017 Frankfurt International Auto Show is only a few days away now, but BMW has decided to pull the curtain back a bit early on its largest SUV yet: the Concept X7 iPerformance. The upcoming crossover will top the German carmaker's existing X5 SUV by offering three-row seating, as well launching as a plug-in hybrid model. BMW has been busy with its concepts lately, with the X7 coming after the recent 8 Series and Z4 reveals.

Kia has rolled out some renderings of a new concept vehicle that will be on display at the 2017 Frankfurt International Motor Show. The concept vehicle is called the Kia Proceed Concept and it is a new body type for the brand. Kia calls the car an "extended hot hatch", but we know a shooting brake or wagon when we see one.

While the car maker has already shown off the high-tech powertrain, it's kept the body design tightly under wraps. But it's starting to draw the curtain back, with a new image that hints at a low-riding, angular shape.

The Mercedes-Benz EQ compact car concept will be part of a packed Frankfurt Motor Show stage when the German car event kicks off in a few weeks time. Mercedes-Benz has big plans for the 2017 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) that will run from September 14 through September 24. Mercedes plans to have a major exhibit that will highlight its plans for "mobility of tomorrow." There will be multiple cars at the show and one of them will be the Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar. The automaker has been stressing since this car was first teased that it will be the first hypercar in the world to use true Formula 1 hybrid drive technology for the street.
