Sundar Pichai vows to fix cheeseburger emoji cheese order

Stop the presses! Or in this case, drop all work at Google on Monday in order to address one of the most critical issues plaguing the company. This is the tongue-in-cheek promise that Google CEO Sundar Pichai made on Twitter, responding to the noise that netizens have been making over what is possibly the most controversial emoji-related scandal to come after The Emoji Movie: the proper placement of the cheese in the cheeseburger emoji.

It is, perhaps, a question worthy of that chicken and egg puzzle that has plagued even the smartest of men. Which comes first, the cheese or the burger. If Google's latest set of emojis is to be taken at face value, the tech giant is clearly of the pre-burger camp.

The problem is that Google might be a one-man army. Rivals such as Apple put the cheese on top of the patty, citing industry standards set by McDonald's. As a proponent for the unification of the Internet, Google takes standards seriously and Pichai vowed to drop everything on Monday to find a solution that everyone can agree on.

That unification spirit drove Google to redesign its emoji set in Android 8.0 Oreo around the more common stylistic conventions of using round faces rather than gumdrop heads. Unsurprisingly, this has caused many closeted blob lover to rise up in arms and find ways to subvert Google's dictatorship.

There will most likely be some debate on the proper placement of the cheese in high-fat dish. Fortunately, emojis are now under the international standard known as Unicode, and standards bodies might have to chime in and put their foot down on the matter. Now if only we could have the same chickens and eggs.
