Starbucks, Spotify let users save what's playing in stores

Starbucks is once again embracing the digital lifestyle, but this time it is dancing to a slightly different beat, almost literally. This time it won't be about ordering through mobile devices or wirelessly charging said devices. Together with Spotify, the companies will be letting customers discover and experience music in a different way, allowing them to save on Spotify the music that's currently playing in a Starbucks store or access a specially curated Starbucks playlist. Now you won't need to try to guess (or use Shazam) to find out what the catchy new tune's name is.

Along with ambient chatter, the usually non-intrusive music playing in coffee shops are usually cited as one of the producitivy boosters in that setting. Starbucks has prided itself in how it has helped nurture the music industry in all its forms, from local to popular, from indie to big labels. Now that musical legacy will be at the customer's fingertips.

The updated Starbucks Mobile App offers users a lot of ways to discover and enjoy music. As mentioned, if you like the tune that's currently playing, you can identify it from the app and then save it to your Spotify list. You can even view the songs that have just been recently played. On the Spotify side, subscribers will be able to see choice playlists from Starbucks as well as music from the coffee company's past 20 years.

These new features will be available in participating Starbucks stores in the US, which haven't been named, though Starbucks does imply that the country's 7,500 stores will get it eventually. The app is available for free for both Android and iOS devices.
