Star Wars 8 without trailers? Let's do it!

What if Star Wars Episode VIII were to be released in theaters with absolutely no trailers between now and then? What if this film were to rely solely on the power of Star Wars fandom to do its promotion? Kylo Ren actor Adam Driver thinks it's a good idea, saying "I think that'd be bold. I'd love it, yeah – then no one would know anything."

"The less people know, I feel like, the more exciting," said Driver, "the more of an event it is." Driver spoke with Sean O'Connell of CinemaBlend about the next big Star Wars film (after Star Wars Rogue One, of course), at an event for Driver's newest movie Silence. But how realistic is releasing a film without any trailers beforehand?

For Star Wars, it's next to impossible. And not just because the film series is now part of Disney. A company like Disney wouldn't dare move outside of their standard trailer-then-movie process, especially given the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Sure, it'd be exciting to go see a film without having seen any trailers whatsoever. People who are super-fans of the film series that wish to go in without any preconceived notions or images of the film beforehand are free to do so already. Trailers, instead, are for people who aren't yet convinced that they'll see a film based on its title – amongst others, I'm sure.

On top of that, Disney has a process in place now in which Lucasfilm pushes Star Wars toys en masse before the release of the film. Ravenous Star Wars fans are more than willing to buy up a whole set of action figures before the release of a film just to get closer to the characters they'll soon see in action. I'm amongst them, to be sure.

Above you'll see the one piece of footage released from Star Wars Episode VIII thus far. This might LOOK like it was filmed for Star Wars The Force Awakens, but it's ever-so-slightly different.
