Smart speakers are mostly used for music and weather says Adobe

If you use a smart speaker or a personal assistant like Alexa on your smartphone, there's a good chance you're using it to stream music and check the weather. Such a conclusion comes from a newly published study by Adobe Analytics, which found that among US users, the majority ask voice assistants to stream music or retrieve the forecast.

The new research focused on users in the United States who use voice services, such as Google Assistant and Alexa. These personal assistants are accessible through smart speakers, such as Google Home and Amazon Echo, as well as on tablets and smartphones. More than 1,000 people in the US were surveyed for the research.

According to Adobe Analytics, 70-percent of those surveyed say they use these voice services to stream music; close in second place was using smart speakers for the weather at 64-percent. Third place on the chart goes to asking "fun questions," which 53-percent of users reported doing.

Less than half of those surveyed used the voice services for getting news, directions, and more. Only 47-percent reported using these services to perform an online search, for example, and 46-percent said they use them for checking the news. Even fewer at 35-percent reported using personal assistants for performing or confirming basic research, and 34-percent used the speakers for getting directions.

Lowest on the list included ordering food, researching flights and hotels, making voice calls, and online shopping. Only 16-percent of users reported researching travel options, for example, while 17-percent said they use voice assistants for ordering takeout and 30-percent reported using these services for online shopping. Thirty-one-percent say they use smart home commands.

The study also found that people are adopting smart speakers at a rapid pace. From January 2018 to August 2018, the number of people who reported owning a smart speaker increased from 28-percent to 32-percent. Among the users, 71-percent said they use their smart speaker at least one time every day, with 44-percent using it more than once every day.
