Sigma announces new dp Quattro camera with fixed 14mm F4 lens

Sigma Corporation has announced a new digital camera that fits into its dp Quattro line at the CP+ imaging show. The new camera is the Sigma dp0 Quattro and features a fixed 14mm F4 lens. Sigma says that the lens is equivalent to a 21mm lens on a 35mm DSLR camera. The lens is optimized for use with the Foveon sensor used inside the camera.

The dp0 lens has four F Low Dispersion glass elements inside that have performance equal to fluorite. Two of those elements are Special Low dispersion and two are aspheric lenses including a double-sided aspheric lens. These elements and the design of the lens give it a 91-degree wide angle of view and depth of field that Sigma says are ideal for architectural shots, interior photography, and landscapes.

The dp0 uses a special sensor that is equivalent in resolution to a 39MP conventional Bayer sensor in testing. The camera uses a three-layered, panchromatic silicon chip with a green-sensitive middle and a red-sensitive bottom layer that each has 4.9MP and record only color/chrominance information. The top layer is blue and captures chrominance and resolution/luminance information at 19.6MP.

The special arrangement gives the camera greater detail capture and resolution capabilities that are higher than the Merrill DP camera line says Sigma. The special sensor also promises true color depth rendition, more detail capture, and faster image processing according to Sigma. Pricing and availability are unannounced at this time.
