Shows ABC has renewed in 2016 (so far)

Have you been crossing your fingers in hopes that your favorite TV shows will be returning? If so, ABC may have some good (or bad, depending) news this evening: it has renewed a bunch of shows, including long-running favorites like Grey's Anatomy and newer hits like The Goldbergs. It may not be all roses and sunshine, though, as the list of renewed series has a couple of glaring absences, including Castle and The Muppets.

At this point, ABC has renewed 15 of its shows, of which the following 11 scripted shows are included:

  • Grey's Anatomy
  • Scandal
  • How to Get Away with Murder
  • Once Upon a Time
  • The Goldbergs
  • Marvel's Agents of SHIELD
  • The Middle
  • Fresh Off the Boat
  • Modern Family
  • Blackish
  • Quantico

Non-scripted shows that have been renewed are:

  • America's Funniest Home Videos
  • Shark Tank
  • Dancing with the Stars

It's an exciting lineup, one that is on the safe-side for ABC — most of these shows have a pretty established history by this point, with things like Grey's Anatomy going into its 13th season and The Middle going into its 8th season. Newer shows are Quantico, which is renewed for its second season, and Black-ish/Fresh off the Boat, both of which are going into their third seasons.

The list is incomplete, though, in the sense that several shows aren't listed and that could mean bad things for their future. Castle, the show staring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, has been a long-running hit for ABC, but is notably absent from the list. As well, there's no sign of the newer not-quite-a-hit The Muppets, and some other series aren't listed: Nashville, Agent Carter, Dr. Ken, etc.

Some of these missing shows did have rocky seasons — we're looking at you, The Muppets — but others may suffer from stars deciding to bow out...a concern Castle fans are increasingly entertaining. Of course, the shows' absence from the list doesn't necessarily mean they won't be returning, it just means you'll have to bite your nails for a little while longer until an official thumbs up (or thumbs down) is made.
